Eggshell Powder Emerges as Sustainable Alternative to Traditional Cement

The study, led by Kechkar Chiraz from University 8 May 1945, highlights how recycling waste materials not only conserves natural resources but also addresses the pressing issue of waste management. Chiraz’s research, published in ‘Medžiagotyra’ (Material Science), reveals that incorporating eggshell powder—rich in calcium carbonate—can enhance the mechanical properties of mortar. The study tested various substitution rates of eggshell powder, finding that a 10% replacement improved workability and increased compressive strength by approximately 10%. Furthermore, the flexural tensile strength saw an impressive boost of around 20%. These enhancements suggest that the construction sector could benefit significantly from integrating this waste material into building practices.

“Using eggshells not only reduces the carbon footprint associated with cement production but also transforms a common waste into a valuable resource,” Chiraz remarked. This sentiment underscores the dual advantage of sustainability and economic efficiency, appealing to construction companies eager to adopt greener practices.

The findings also indicate that the mortar produced with eggshell powder exhibited reduced density and greater durability, with lower porosity and water absorption rates. However, it is essential to note that while the mortar showed improved performance in several areas, its resistance to sulfuric acid was diminished.
