Kharazmi University Study Maps Future of Sustainable Construction Risk Management

In the dynamic world of construction, the integration of sustainable practices has become more than just a trend—it’s a necessity. However, with the increasing complexity of sustainable construction projects (SCPs), managing risks has become a critical challenge. A recent study, published in ‘مدیریت صنعتی’ (Industrial Management), sheds light on the current state and future directions of risk management in SCPs. Led by Kasra Hosseini, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Kharazmi University in Tehran, Iran, the research offers a comprehensive analysis of the existing literature and identifies key areas that require further exploration.

The study, a systematic review and bibliometric analysis, examined 1,630 articles published between 2015 and 2023. The findings reveal a significant increase in research on risk management in SCPs, highlighting five main themes: general risks of sustainability, sustainable procurement, supply chain, technology adoption, and human resources. “The complexity of SCPs demands a holistic approach to risk management,” Hosseini explains. “By categorizing risks into eight dimensions—financial, social, managerial, knowledge, governmental, stakeholder, environmental, and technological—we can better understand the multifaceted nature of these projects.”

One of the most compelling aspects of the research is its identification of gaps in current methodologies. The study found that experimental and applied research contributions are less prevalent compared to descriptive and review research. This discrepancy presents a clear opportunity for future studies to delve deeper into practical solutions. “There is a noticeable preference for survey strategies among researchers, which, while valuable, often lack the depth of experimental studies,” Hosseini notes. “This points to a need for more applied research that can address various problems and assumptions in SCPs.”

The bibliometric analysis also provides insights into future research trends. Keywords such as the circular economy, recycling, risk assessment, and factor analysis are expected to gain prominence. This shift suggests a growing emphasis on sustainable practices that minimize waste and maximize resource efficiency. For the energy sector, this could mean a greater focus on renewable energy sources and efficient construction methods that reduce the environmental footprint of projects.

The implications of this research are far-reaching. As the construction industry continues to evolve, understanding and managing risks in SCPs will be crucial for ensuring the success of sustainable initiatives. The study’s findings underscore the need for a more comprehensive approach to risk management, one that integrates economic, environmental, and social dimensions.
