Easpring Finland’s €800M Battery Plant to Boost Europe’s Green Transition

The construction industry is on the cusp of a significant shift, with sustainability and technological innovation at the forefront. Easpring Finland New Materials Oy’s upcoming cathode active material (CAM) plant in Kotka, Finland, exemplifies this transformative trend. Set to commence construction in April 2025, this project is not just about building a new facility; it’s about fortifying Europe’s battery supply chain and accelerating the transition to sustainable energy solutions.

The plant, located in the Keltakallio industrial area, has already secured the necessary environmental and construction permits, paving the way for a smooth development process. By 2027, the facility is expected to commence commercial production, with an initial annual capacity of 60,000 tonnes of cathode active material. This crucial component for lithium-ion batteries will primarily serve European battery cell manufacturers, aligning perfectly with the continent’s push for cleaner mobility and energy independence.

The economic impact of this project is substantial. The EUR 800 million investment will create approximately 270 direct jobs during full operation and generate around 800 employment opportunities during peak construction periods. This influx of jobs will not only stimulate the local economy but also position Kotka as a key player in the global battery production landscape.

Easpring Finland, a joint venture between Beijing Easpring Material Technology (70%) and Finnish Minerals Group (30%), is leveraging advanced technologies from its parent company to ensure high-quality, sustainably produced cathode materials. Jashon Guan, CEO of Easpring Finland, underscored the significance of this investment, stating, “We have been planning this project alongside our partner, Finnish Minerals Group, for several years. We have also received invaluable support from our local partners, the City of Kotka and Cursor Oy. This investment is a major milestone for Easpring as we establish localized production in Europe to serve the growing market demand.”

The strategic location of the Kotka plant, coupled with its commitment to sustainability, positions it as a cornerstone in Europe’s battery industry. Vesa Koivisto, Chief Commercial Officer of Easpring Finland, emphasized the plant’s role in advancing the European battery industry. “We are excited to commence construction on Finland’s first cathode active material plant. Leveraging the advanced technologies of our parent company, Beijing Easpring, our Kotka facility will deliver high-quality, sustainably produced cathode materials to European battery cell manufacturers.”

The plant’s capacity to supply cathode material for approximately 750,000 electric vehicles (EVs) annually underscores its pivotal role in Europe’s transition to electric mobility. This initiative not only supports the region’s push for cleaner energy but also reinforces Europe’s supply chain resilience, reducing dependence on foreign battery materials.
