Oil Shale’s Green Revolution: Hainan Researchers Unlock Sustainable Energy Potential

In the quest for sustainable energy solutions, researchers are turning their attention to oil shale, a fossil energy source with vast reserves and significant potential. A recent minireview published in the journal *Oil Shale* (which translates to *Oil Shale* in English) sheds light on the comprehensive utilization of oil shale, offering insights that could reshape the energy sector’s approach to this resource.

Led by Fang Lu from the Yazhou Bay Innovation Institute at Hainan Tropical Ocean University, the research delves into the entire lifecycle of oil shale, from extraction to energy production, and even the treatment of abandoned mines. The study emphasizes the importance of green and high-value utilization of oil shale and its by-products, such as semi-coke and ash, to mitigate environmental pollution.

“The comprehensive utilization of oil shale is not just about energy production,” Lu explains. “It’s about maximizing the value of this resource throughout its lifecycle, ensuring economic benefits while minimizing environmental impact.”

The minireview highlights several innovative strategies for efficient resource use. These include circulating fluidized bed combustion, in situ conversion, and co-combustion and co-pyrolysis with biomass.
