Turkish Stone Unlocks Sustainable Future for Energy Sector

In the heart of Turkey’s touristic Çesme district, a unique stone has long been celebrated for its aesthetic appeal in building cladding. But the Alaçatı stone, or Alapietra, has a lesser-known potential that could revolutionize the construction industry, particularly in the energy sector. A recent study published in the *Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies* (translated as *Journal of Sustainable Building Materials and Technologies*) explores this untapped possibility, offering a glimpse into a more sustainable future.

Tahir Kemal Erdem, a civil engineering professor at Marmara University in Istanbul, led the research that investigated the reuse of Alaçatı stone as a lightweight aggregate (LWA) in both conventional and self-consolidating concrete (SCC) mixtures. The study, which aimed to address the environmental pollution caused by the stone’s waste, demonstrated promising results that could have significant commercial impacts.

The research team prepared concrete mixtures with three different water-to-cement ratios (w/c) and produced both conventional concrete and SCC mixtures with varying superplasticizer content. They conducted a series of tests, including slump, slump flow, T50, V-funnel, sieve segregation, dry density, and compressive strength tests, to evaluate the performance of the concretes.

The results were encouraging. “We found that it was possible to use Alaçatı stone aggregate to produce lightweight concretes with good performance in both fresh and hardened states,” Erdem said. This finding could open up new avenues for the construction industry, particularly in the energy sector, where lightweight and sustainable materials are increasingly in demand.

The use of Alaçatı stone aggregate in concrete could lead to more energy-efficient buildings, reducing the overall energy consumption of structures. Moreover, the reuse of waste material in construction aligns with the growing trend towards sustainability and circular economy principles.
