Russian Study Sparks Hope for Diesel-Free Future with Ethanol, Rapeseed Oil

Likhanov, a researcher from Vyatka State Agrotechnological University, has been delving into the world of alternative fuels, specifically ethanol and rapeseed oil, and their potential to power diesel engines more sustainably.

Likhanov’s work, recently published in ‘Advanced Engineering Research’ (translated from Russian as ‘Advanced Engineering Research’), focuses on the power and economic indicators, as well as the combustion process parameters of a diesel engine with an undivided hemispherical combustion chamber in the piston. This is a significant area of study, as it addresses a gap in experimental research on Russian diesel engines, which differ markedly from their European and Asian counterparts.

The study reveals that when a diesel engine runs on ethanol and rapeseed oil, the ignition delay period increases, affecting the “rigidity” of the combustion process and leading to a growth in Pz value. “These factors are most likely the main limitations for the use of ethanol by direct injection,” Likhanov explains. However, he proposes a solution: using ignition (pilot) rapeseed oil to adjust the combustion process parameters through controlling the amount of ignition fuel supply.
