Ukrainian Expert Redefines Rigid Pavement Design Standards

In the realm of road construction, a significant stride is being made towards enhancing the design and calculation methods for rigid pavements, a development that could reshape the industry’s standards and practices. Anatolii Tsynka, from the State Enterprise «National Institute for Development Infrastructure» (SE «NIDI») in Kyiv, Ukraine, has spearheaded this research, published in the journal ‘Дороги і мости’ (translated to English as ‘Roads and Bridges’).

Tsynka’s work delves into the intricacies of designing highways with rigid road surfaces, a critical aspect of modern infrastructure development. The research is rooted in a comprehensive analysis of domestic and global experiences, current legal frameworks, and technical literature, all while considering the diverse subsoil conditions, traffic densities, and climatic variations across Ukraine.

The study underscores the necessity for a unified and improved approach to designing rigid road surfaces, taking into account their operational peculiarities and optimizing material and technical resources. As Tsynka explains, “The proposed method of designing rigid road surfaces on highways improves the existing ones and establishes new, scientifically based, modern requirements for design and calculation parameters.”

The research culminated in the development of the DSTU project and Handbook No. 1, which provide guidelines for calculating characteristics of soils, road surface materials, and vehicle loads. These guidelines are applicable to various types of rigid road surfaces, including those with cement concrete, steel or composite reinforcement, and continuous reinforcement.
