Indonesian Study Reveals Pipeline Material Cost Impact

In the ever-evolving energy sector, the construction of gas transmission pipelines plays a pivotal role in meeting the demands of both industrial and household consumers. A recent study, published in the journal *Rekayasa Sipil* (translated as “Civil Engineering”), sheds light on the significant impact that material specifications can have on the cost performance of these critical projects. Led by Hamonangan Girsang from the Department of Professional Engineering at Mercubuana University in Indonesia, the research offers valuable insights for contractors, consultants, and stakeholders in the energy sector.

The study focuses on a 74-kilometer gas transmission pipeline project, comparing the costs associated with detailed engineering design based on pipe specifications against the initial conceptual design. Girsang and his team employed a quantitative approach, conducting field engineering surveys and analyzing work volumes and unit prices. The detailed engineering design was then compared with the conceptual design to assess the cost implications.

One of the key findings of the study is the variation in pipe materials required for different work methods, such as Horizontal Directional Drilling, Auger Boring, and Open Cut. According to Girsang, “The influence of pipe material specifications based on work methods resulted in an 18.3% increase in costs.” This substantial cost increase underscores the importance of careful material selection and detailed engineering design in managing project budgets effectively.

The research highlights the necessity for integrated design and build contractors to perform detailed engineering surveys to verify volumes and implementation methods. By doing so, they can better manage costs associated with pipe materials, which vary depending on the stress and strain experienced during construction.
